What is Osteoporosis ?

Osteoporosis occurs when the balance between bone building and bone breaking down chemicals in the body becomes upset. As people get older the body gets better at breaking down bones than making them. In women especially after they hit menopause, the lack of oestrogen in their body causes them to break down bones even faster.

When the bones are thinner they are more fragile and your risk of fractures increases significantly. This combined with decreased balance can put you at a high risk of falls and subsequently fractures. So… what can you do if you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis to prevent this?

The answer is weight bearing exercise. This is any physical activity you perform on land where you are putting weight through your feet, or your arms! This can include exercises like walking, climbing stairs and push ups.

The other type of exercise that can promote bone building is resistance (or strength) training. This is where you lift or hold weights while performing specific exercises.
