As physios we often see people who are suffering from Headaches.

We have noticed that there are 3 common questions that people often ask and I wanted to answer these for you:

  1. Are there different types of Headaches?

Yes, there are many different types of headaches, but the main 3 are cervicogenic headaches, migraine, tension. In short terms cervicogenic headaches are headaches that are specifically coming from the neck, the first 3 vertebrae in your cervical spine. The nerves from this area share the same pathway as nerves from your skull, and therefore if you have any dysfunction through the joints, disc or soft tissue through your upper neck, you are at risk of developing a headache.

Tension headaches are one of the most common headaches and were previously referred to as “muscle contraction headaches” or “stress headaches”. These types of headaches arise from tension or tightness in your muscles, specifically in your neck, upper back, shoulders or all of these combined.

Migraines are headaches that stem more specifically from your circulatory system in your head. They are often associated with other symptoms, including light sensitivity, nausea or vomiting.

  1. What are the symptoms from headaches arising from the neck?

If you are suffering a headache that arises from the neck, either a cervicogenic headache or tension type headache you may also get symptoms or pain through the neck, upper shoulders or back. You may feel stiff or like you have “knots” in your muscle. They are often one sided, however can occur on both sides depending on the damage causing the pain.

  1. Can physio help with Headaches?

The short answer for this is YES, absolutely. However, it does depend on the type of headache. True migraines are best assessed by your Doctor and respond well to medications. Cervicogenic and tension headaches can be assessed and treated by a physiotherapist. We will assess your neck movement, muscular tension and any further associated factors that may be causing your headache. We can then work to reduce your muscle tension, improve your mobility and this will lead to improving your headache.
If you are suffering a headache and you are not sure what type, or what to do about it, come down and see us and we can get your assessed and onto the right track
