Physiotherapists specialise in movement and function disorders and are therefore the perfect professionals to prescribe appropriate exercises for your needs. You may require an exercise program after an injury, as part of your rehabilitation following surgery, as a preventative measure or management option in the case of a chronic condition or lifestyle problem.
Your individual exercise program may include home-based exercises using just your body, small weights or elastic resistance bands; hydrotherapy or water-based exercises; individual or class pilates; gym-based exercises or any combination of these.
What is Hydrotherapy?
Hydrotherapy is the use of specific exercises in a warm pool instructed by an aquatic physiotherapist. This provides the benefits of warmth, increasing circulation and decreasing pain; buoyancy, which helps to enable patients to weight-bear more easily with less stress on joints; resistance, which provides a work-out for the muscles of the body; and a non-impact environment to improve cardiorespiratory fitness.
At Miami Physiotherapy we have a 9m by 2.5m purpose-built hydrotherapy pool. It has step entry with a handrail for safe entry. It is kept at a depth of 1.3m and heated throughout the year. To offset the environmental impact of the electric heater, we have a 30kW (that’s 120 solar electric generating panels!) solar system to generate our power.
If you would like to start a hydrotherapy exercise program at Miami Physiotherapy, you will first require an appointment in our clinic so that we can assess and diagnose your health issue so that your hydrotherapy exercise program can be tailored to your individual needs.
We get in the pool with you to teach you your individualised program and ensure you are using the correct technique to maximise your outcome. If you feel confident with your program, you may choose to continue independently, but we are happy to attend the pool with you as many times as you require to supervise and progress your exercises. We expect you to complete your program a minimum of twice a week in combination with some land-based home exercises for the best outcome and expect to see results in as little as 6 weeks.
