Your knees might be getting older — but that doesn’t mean you have to slow down.

Have you noticed that walking, climbing stairs, getting up from a chair or keeping up with the grandkids isn’t quite as easy as it used to be?

Maybe your knee has started feeling stiff and painful, so you’ve gradually stopped doing the things you enjoy.

You might even be thinking:

“Is this just part of getting older?”

The good news is — knee osteoarthritis doesn’t mean you have to give up an active life.

What is knee osteoarthritis?

Knee osteoarthritis is a condition where the structures within the knee gradually change over time. This can cause pain, stiffness and reduced strength and movement.

But an important thing to understand is that pain doesn’t always equal damage, and having arthritis doesn’t mean your knee is too damaged to exercise.

In fact, avoiding movement because you’re worried about hurting your knee can sometimes lead to a cycle of:

Pain → less movement → weakness → less confidence → even less activity.

And that’s exactly what we want to break.

3 things you can start doing for your knees

  1. Keep moving

Don’t let fear of pain convince you that complete rest is the answer.

Walking, cycling, swimming and other low-impact activities can help you maintain movement and fitness.

The key is finding the right amount of activity for your current capacity and gradually building from there.

  1. Build your strength

Strong legs help you manage everyday activities such as:

  • Climbing stairs
  • Getting out of a chair
  • Walking
  • Getting in and out of the car
  • Carrying groceries
  • Gardening

Your rehabilitation should be progressive — gradually challenging your muscles so your body becomes stronger and more capable.

  1. Focus on what you want to keep doing

Instead of only asking:

“How do I get rid of my knee pain?”

Ask:

“What do I want my body to be able to do in 5, 10 or 20 years?”

Maybe it’s travelling.

Maybe it’s playing with your grandchildren.

Maybe it’s walking every morning, playing golf, gardening or simply being able to get around independently.

Your physiotherapy program should work towards your life, not just your knee.

Your future shouldn’t be limited by your knees

Getting older doesn’t mean you have to accept becoming weaker, less mobile or less independent.

Longevity isn’t just about living longer — it’s about being able to live well for longer.

If knee pain or stiffness is stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, it may be time for a reassessment.

We can assess your knee, strength, mobility and current activity levels and help you understand what you can safely do now and how to progress from there.
