Here is a thought many new mums have:
“It hurts so much to feed my baby… I’m dreading every feed. But I don’t want to stop breastfeeding either. Isn’t there something that can help?”
In this blog, I’ll explain how two common issues—cracked nipples and mastitis—can be relieved with the help of physiotherapy treatments, including laser therapy and therapeutic ultrasound. These treatments are safe, effective, and can help you get back to pain-free feeding faster.
What are Cracked Nipples?
These are small, painful breaks or fissures in the skin of the nipple, often caused by poor latch, incorrect positioning, or a strong suck, especially when you are first learning to feed your baby. Cracked nipples can become so painful that continuing to breastfeed feels impossible.
And what about Mastitis?
This is inflammation of the breast tissue, often caused by blocked milk ducts or bacteria entering through cracked skin. It can cause firm, sore areas, redness, swelling, heat, pain, and sometimes fever and flu-like symptoms.
Both conditions can affect your breastfeeding journey—but they don’t have to end it.
I’m sure you’ll be familiar with the story. The early days with your new baby were magical—baby cuddles, that new-born smell, and the joy of watching your little one feed. But things can change quickly. Your nipples get sore, cracked and bleeding. It can be so sore you are in tears when it is time to feed. Then comes the mastitis—your breast is red, hot, swollen, and you feel like you have the flu. You might even start thinking about whether you will have to stop breastfeeding.
But, 3 to 4 sessions of laser for your nipples, and the cracks heal, the soreness goes and you no longer dread feeding times. The mastitis will respond even quicker – 1 to 2 sessions of ultrasound will get rid of the redness, soreness and blocked ducts, without antibiotics and so you don’t have to dump your milk. Combine this with some help with feeding positions, instructions on self massage and sometimes expressing and your feeding journey can get back on track and be the magical bonding time that you imagined.
So lets explain how laser and ultrasound helps.
1: Laser Treatment for Cracked Nipples
High-Level Laser Therapy is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that promotes tissue healing, reduces inflammation, and relieves pain. It’s safe to use between feeds and can accelerate healing even when nipples are damaged or bleeding.
2: Therapeutic Ultrasound for Mastitis
Ultrasound treatment helps to break down blocked ducts, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. It can quickly relieve mastitis symptoms and often prevent the need for antibiotics. It’s most effective when used early.
3: Breastfeeding Position & Latch Assessment
Alongside treatment, we help you identify and correct the root cause—often related to baby’s latch or positioning. If required, we can refer you to a lactation consultant to also provide strategies to prevent recurrence.
We can provide the laser, ultrasound and advice during the same session depending on what you need.
