Did you know that resistance training is beneficial for older adults?

Today, Emily is going to explain what resistance training is and answer a few questions regarding resistance training in older adults.

Q: What is resistance training?

Resistance training is a form of physical activity which uses external resistance, to exercise muscle or muscle groups. External resistance can be anything from your own body weight, free weights such as dumbbells.

Q: What are the benefits of resistance training in older adults?

Resistance training in older adults increases and prevents loss of muscle mass which in turn improves strength. Resistance training also improves bone density and balance, which will help maintain your independence. Improvements in all of the above also helps to prevent falls and injuries during falls.

Q: When should I start resistance training?

Start now! Studies have shown that people gradually start losing muscle strength between the age of 30 and 50. From 60 years of age, muscle strength loss could be as high as 15% and by 80 years old, as high as 30%.

Q: I have other health issues such as osteoporosis, cardiac/respiratory issues, etc. Should I be doing strength training exercises?

YES! Strength training can help with managing your other health issues and help you feel much better physically and mentally! A supervised strength training program is highly recommended to ensure that you are doing the right exercises for you.
